What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a system of natural medicine that works on the principle of “like cures like.” This means that a substance capable of producing symptoms in a healthy person can, when prepared in a specific way and given in very small doses, stimulate the body's own healing response in someone experiencing similar symptoms.

Rather than focusing solely on a named disease, homeopathy takes a whole-person approach. Physical symptoms, emotional state, mental wellbeing, energy levels, sleep, and individual reactions to stress or environment are all considered when selecting a remedy. Treatment is therefore highly individualised, with the aim of supporting balance and long-term health rather than suppressing symptoms.

Homeopathic remedies are prepared through a process of serial dilution and succussion (a specific method of vigorous shaking). This process is central to homeopathy and enhances the therapeutic effect while minimising toxicity, making remedies gentle and suitable for people of all ages.

The Origins of Homeopathy

Homeopathy was founded in the late 18th century by Dr Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician, chemist, and linguist. Dissatisfied with the harsh medical practices of his time — such as bloodletting and the routine use of toxic substances — Hahnemann began searching for a safer and more rational approach to healing.

While translating a medical text by the Scottish physician Dr William Cullen, Hahnemann came across Cullen's explanation of why cinchona bark was effective in treating malaria. Curious and unconvinced by the prevailing theory, Hahnemann decided to experiment on himself. When he took cinchona bark while healthy, he experienced symptoms remarkably similar to malaria. When he stopped taking it, the symptoms disappeared.

This observation led Hahnemann to formulate the principle that a substance which causes symptoms in health can help relieve similar symptoms in illness – the principle of “like cures like” as it became known. He went on to systematically test many substances on healthy volunteers — a process known as “provings” — carefully recording the physical, emotional, and mental effects they produced. These provings became the foundation of the homeopathic Materia Medica used by practitioners today.

Over more than 200 years, homeopathy has continued to develop and is now practised worldwide and used by millions, valued for its individualised, holistic, and gentle approach to health and wellbeing.
